Can You Hear Me???

July 1, 2010

I haven’t always owned a cell-phone. In fact, I’ve been anti-phone for most of my life, seriously! I didn’t get a cell-phone until November 2009, when my mother and sister insisted. And my first one was a very cheap and flimsy one, that made texting a nightmare! I’ve long upgraded to a nice (though costly, imho) keyboard phone, with all the trimmings. And I pay my cell-phone bill on time and in full. I use it to stay in touch with my best friend, when the internet is not an option, and I play around with the ring-tones.

However, I’ve been aggravated for the past few months, as I get calls from unknown numbers, constantly calling in the day or in the middle of the night. It’s the same few numbers, two from around my city, and one from New York. Sometimes they leave a voice-mail of, “Rick! Man, where are you? Holler back!” or strange garbled ones that I can’t make out. :-/

I am not in the habit of answering numbers that I don’t recognize, so I was pretty sure my voice-message would be enough to explain to people that they have the wrong number! As it’s an automatic message of  “You have reach the phone of -“Dani!”- and they are not available. Please leave a message after the tone.” I had assumed that the female cheer of my name would make it clear that I am not a “Rick”…

But, people ignore that and still insist they have the right number! So, I was thinking of making a formal message, with myself speaking full sentences. However, I found out that doing so would be a waste of time. My mother has an business cell-phone, with her message of stating her business name and her title of Doctor. Still people call and leave messages for others, ignoring all of that. And even if she answers, they insist that Betty or Jim is hiding in the background and playing some type of prank on them, asking “Are you SURE Jim isn’t there?” So, my mother is harassed by stupid people too. :-o

What happened in today’s world? There use to be a time, when a person heard the wrong voice on the answering machine (yes, shows you what era I lived in, with machines that held audio tape and took messages for you), that people got the hint that they had the wrong number. OR, if an unfamiliar voice answered and TOLD THEM they had the wrong number, then a person would know the fact! But…. it seems like people are NOT LISTENING anymore! Is this thing on? Can anybody hear me??? You have the wrong number and stop calling me!!!! :-(

Just to be a smart-ass, I had downloaded a new ring-tone for my phone… “Telephone” by Lady Gaga, featuring Beyonce. The lyrics are, “Stop calling, stop calling! I don’t want to pick up the phone…” And 90 percent of the time,  when I hear that ring-tone, it IS a call from some stranger that I wish would STOP CALLING! Sigh…
